Enrollment Status

In higher education:

  • A semester is a period of academic study. Generally, an academic year is divided into two semesters.
  • Courses are the individual classes students take during a semester.
  • Semester units are a measurement of the workload of each course. One semester unit usually means attending one hour of class per week throughout the semester (semester units do not include time spent outside of the class on assignments, readings, and other related tasks).

Generally, a certain number of units are required for graduation.

Example
  • Suppose you take two courses during a semester and each course is worth three units. In this case, your semester would have six semester units. This means you are attending approximately six hours of class per week (and are considered to have a half-time enrollment status).
  • Suppose you take four courses during a semester and each course is worth three units. In this case, your semester would have 12 semester units. This means you are attending approximately 12 hours of class per week (and are considered to have a full-time enrollment status).
