Standard Action Verbs

Action Verbs for Mobile Apps are borrowed from the Apple Style Guide.

Action Verb Platform Usage
Navigate Web Use when moving around a page or going to a feature (e.g., “Navigate to the Settings icon”).
Search for Web Use in conjunction with another action (e.g., “Search for an applicant” or “Search for and select an applicant”).
Select Web Use when interacting with an item in a list, drop-down, radio button, or checkbox.
Click Web Use when interacting with a button, menu, tab, or panel. Omit “on” (e.g., “Click the Settings menu”).
Enter Web Use when inputting content in a text field.
Drag or Drag and drop Web Use when moving an item from one location to another.
Add Web Primarily for Time2Track when adding activities, faculty, or supervisors.
Create Web Use as an introduction to a multi-step process or training workflow.
Tap Mobile Quick touch and release to select a control.
Drag Mobile Move a finger across the screen to scroll or reposition items.
Swipe Mobile Quickly slide one or more fingers accross the screen or trackpad to reveal controls or to scroll through documents, lists, or groups of items. Implies a less controlled motion than dragging (e.g., Swipe over the note and tap Delete, Swipe left or right to move between dates).
Pinch Mobile Use two fingers to zoom in or out.
Rotate Mobile Use two fingers to rotate items.
Touch and hold Mobile Press and hold until an action occurs.
