Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is a community-based organization?

CBOs are non-profit or government funded organizations or programs that help students become college-ready. They do not charge for their services and often serve students from historically marginalized communities.

There is a group of CBO questions within the Academic History section of your application. The CBO section prompts you to share up to 3 CBOs that helped you with the application process. Colleges use this information to better understand your story and community. They may also use this information to connect you with additional college advising resources.

For each CBO, select the organization from our list of 200+ CBOs. If an organization is not listed, you can select an "other" option and enter the CBO's name. You can also optionally share a name, email, and phone number of a counselor, advisor, or mentor from the selected CBO.

What if my CBO is not listed?

Select Other and enter the organization's name.

How can my organization be included in Common App's CBO list?
