Citizenship Details

Select your citizenship status and country of citizenship, if applicable. If you have dual citizenship, indicate your second country of citizenship.

When selecting your status, consider the following definitions which are adapted from the US State Department:

  • U.S. citizen or U.S. national: an individual who was born in the U.S. or attained citizenship through naturalization.
  • U.S. dual citizen: a citizen of the United States and another country.
  • U.S. permanent resident: an individual who holds a Green Card and is permitted to permanently live and work in the U.S.
  • U.S. refugee or asylee: an individual who has official status as an asylee or refugee in the United States.
  • DACA, undocumented, Deferred Enforced Departure, Temporary Protected Status: an individual who is undocumented or who currently holds an official protected status in the United States.
  • Citizen of non-U.S. country: an individual who is an alien – a nonimmigrant foreign national – who is approved to temporarily live in the U.S. for a specific purpose (e.g., as a student), has a permanent residence abroad, and does not hold a Green Card. Or, an individual who is a nonimmigrant foreign national and who is permitted to travel in the U.S. for tourism or business for stays of 90 days or less. Or, an individual who has no U.S .citizenship or visa (immigrant or nonimmigrant) status.

Common App welcomes and encourages students who are undocumented or who currently hold DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) to apply. You may select the option for DACA, undocumented, Deferred Enforced Departure, Temporary Protected Status in the Citizenship Status question.

Note: to ensure applicants are entering consistent data for some questions, this application uses pre-populated answer options that are maintained by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). For example, country answer options are derived from ISO 3166, which is the international standard for country codes and codes for their subdivisions.

Visa Information

When selecting your visa type, consider the following definitions which are adapted from the U.S. State Department. Note that this list is not all-inclusive. Refer to the U.S. State Department for more information.

  • A-1 Foreign Diplomatic Personnel: an individual representing their country and conducting official business on behalf of their home country in the U.S.
  • A-2 Dependent Foreign Diplomatic Personnel: a dependent of an A-1 visa holder.
  • A-3 Employee of Foreign Gov Office: a personal employee, attendant, or domestic worker for an A-1 or A-2 visa holder.
  • B-2 Tourist: an individual who is in the U.S. for a short visit for vacation, visiting family and friends, or for medical treatment.
  • E-2 Dependent of Treaty Investor: a dependent of an E-2 visa holder, a national of a treaty country with the U.S. who is investing capital in a U.S. business.
  • F-1 Student: an individual who wants to study at a U.S. academic institution. This is the most common student visa type.
  • F-2 Dependent of F-1 Student: a dependent of an F-1 Student visa holder.
  • G-1 Representative of International Organization: an individual who is a diplomat, government official, or employee of an international organization in the U.S.
  • G-2 Dependent of Representative of International Organization: a dependent of a G-1 visa holder.
  • G-3 Dependent of Representative of International Organization: a dependent of a G-1 visa holder.
  • G-4 Dependent of Representative of International Organization: a dependent of a G-1 visa holder.
  • H-4 Dependent of H Visa Holder: a dependent of an H visa holder, an individual in the U.S. as a temporary worker.
  • J-1 Exchange Visitor: an individual who wants to study at a U.S. academic institution. This is generally used for students in educational exchange programs (e.g., Fulbright Program).
  • J-2 Dependent of J-1 Visa Holder: a dependent of a J-1 visa holder.
  • L-2 Dependent of L-1 Visa Holder: a dependent of an L-1 visa holder, an individual in the U.S. who has been transferred by their employer from an affiliated foreign office to an office within the U.S.
  • Other Visa Type: an individual who has received a visa type not listed. Note that this list is not all-inclusive and more visa types may be available in the application.
  • R-2 Dependent of R-1 Visa Holder: a dependent of an R-1 visa holder, an individual in the U.S. as a minister or employed in a religious occupation.

Residency Information

Provide your residency information, including your legal state of residence, and the number of years you have been a resident of that state. If your legal state of residence is outside of the U.S., select International and enter the number of years you have lived in the U.S.
