Working with AI Application Summaries
The AI Application Summary feature is designed to provide you with a concise, objective overview of an application. It is presented as a short narrative that describes the applicant’s submitted information in plain language, incorporating key content like forms, references, and documents.

When enabled, the AI Application Summary can:
- Summarize key sections of an application (e.g., personal information, academics, essays, and other applicant submissions).
- Present information in a consistent format across all applications.
- Highlight what’s included in an application before opening each section, making it easier to triage and complete your initial review.
The summary is objective and informational only. It does not evaluate, score, rank, recommend, or make decisions about applicants. It does not introduce data from outside the application, apply judgment, or infer applicant intent. Instead, it organizes and restates application data to support efficient review.
Accessing the AI Application Summary
If an administrator has enabled the feature in your environment, you can generate an AI Application Summary on demand for each application. To do so:
- Open the application record of your choice.
- Click the wand icon at the top right.

- If a summary has not yet been generated, click Summarize in the AI Application Summary panel. If a summary has already been generated for this application, click Regenerate to produce a new summary that factors in any updates to the application since the last summary. Note that the summary you generate is shared and visible by all users with the View AI Application Summary permission. Summaries can only be regenerated if one of the following is true:
- the application has been updated.
- the configuration of the summary was changed (e.g, you added or removed forms that are considered in the summary).
- To view past versions of the summary, click History from the More Options (3-dots) menu.
Configuring the AI Application Summary
To work with the AI Application Summary feature, it first needs to be enabled and configured in your environment. To enable the feature, go to AI Application Summary in the AI Features section of the Settings Menu. Click Activate. If the AI Features section doesn't appear in your environment, reach out to your account team to request access. Contact support for questions or assistance.

Once the feature is enabled, you can configure several options including:
- Who can generate summaries
- Included content
- Summary length
- Data restrictions
If desired, you can return to this page and click Deactivate at any time to remove the AI Summary option from your applications.
Configuring Included Content
You can choose which forms, references, documents, and portfolios are eligible for summarization so that only relevant materials (e.g., essays and evaluations) are included. The AI can summarize PDFs and Word documents that are part of those selected items.
Configuring Summary Length
By configuring the length of the summary, you can determine how concise you want the summaries to be, based on your review workflow. In the Summary Length section, you can choose to generate a short, medium, or long summary. To do this, make a selection under Approximate length per checklist. Note that shorter summaries are ideal for quick triage, while longer summaries provide more detail for in-depth review.
Data Restrictions
AI Application Summaries can be configured to not include specific data points. Since the summaries respect role-based data permissions, this data restriction is based on what role you've selected in the Details area of the AI Application Summary settings. This allows you to prevent sensitive data from being included, even if it exists in the application.
From the settings page, under Please select which role will be used to generate AI Application Summaries, you can choose which user role has permission to generate summaries. Any fields restricted for that role will not appear in the AI summaries.
For example, if the chosen role restricts Country of Citizenship, that data will never appear in any AI Application Summary, even for users whose own role normally can see it.
Configuration History
Click the history icon at the top right of the AI Application Summary settings page to see a history of changes made to your AI Application Summary settings. This history includes what was changed, who made the change, and when it was changed.
Export Related Settings
While configuring the Contents section of an Application PDF Export, check AI Summary to include the AI Application Summary in your PDF export. If this option is selected, your PDF export will include the most recent AI Application Summary. Note that if no summary has been generated, the export includes a page that indicates this.
