Do I have to register for the Match?

Applicants must register for the Match to submit applications to residencies using PhORCAS. Residencies conducted by the Indian Health Service and programs that offer positions exclusively to commissioned officers of the Department of Defense or the Public Health Service are exempt from the ASHP Match. However, if these programs collect their applications through PhORCAS, then applicants must register for the Match to send applications to these programs.

Additionally, international programs conducted outside of the United States are exempt from the Match, although some may choose to participate in the Match. Applicants applying to an international program should check with the program directly to determine whether or not the program is participating in the Match. Information on the Match participation status of an international program is also available from the ASHP residency program directory or the ASHP Match website. If the program is participating in the Match, you will need to register for the Match.

What qualifications are required to register for the Match?

To register for the Match, you must be a graduate of or graduating from an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy, or otherwise be eligible for licensure in the United States. Applicants who are graduates of a foreign school of pharmacy must provide, prior to registering for the Match, either a copy of their license for each state in which they are licensed, or a copy of their Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee (FPGEC) certificate.

To participate in the Match for a position that starts training at the PGY2 level, an applicant must have already completed a PGY1 residency, or currently be in training in a PGY1 residency program that will be completed before the start of the PGY2 residency.

In addition, each program sets its own eligibility requirements for applicants that it will consider. You should obtain information about each program’s requirements from the ASHP Online Residency Directory and the program directly.

How do I register for the Match?

You register for the Match on the PhORCAS application. Match registration opens on November 1, 2023. After providing the information necessary to set up an account on the PhORCAS application, you select the option to indicate that you wish to register for the Match. You must also agree to the terms of the Applicant Agreement for the Match and pay the Match registration fee of $160 USD.

What is the deadline to register for the Match?

It is recommended that you register for the Match before December 31, 2023. Registrations can be accepted after that date, if necessary. Pharmacy residencies must offer all their funded positions that start training in 2023 in Phase I of the Match so it is recommended that you register in time to participate in Phase I of the Match. Applicants applying to residencies that participate in the Match must register for the Match before they can submit applications to those programs.

• Latest Registration Date for Phase I is February 29, 2024.
• Latest Registration Date for Phase II is April 2, 2024.

Do I register separately for Phase I and Phase II of the Match?

No. You register for the Match only once; applicants who do not obtain a position in Phase I of the Match will be automatically eligible to participate in Phase II of the Match and do not need to register a second time.

What papers, transcripts, etc. must I submit to the Match?

None. All application materials should be sent to the programs to which you apply, either through PhORCAS or directly, not to the Match. Match registration is separate from and unrelated to your applications to programs.

How do I apply to programs?

For programs that participate in PhORCAS, you should complete the application on the PhORCAS website and use the PhORCAS system to submit the application to the program(s).

What if I am applying to only one program?

If the program participates in the Match, you must still register for and participate in the Match in order to obtain a position at the program.

Current PGY1 residents who are interested in continuing their training in a PGY2 residency operated by the same organization or health system as the applicant’s PGY1 residency may be able to obtain the position through an Early Commitment Process. Applicants who are committed to a position in this manner do not need to register for or participate in the Match. More information about the Early Commitment Process is provided on the Match website.
