Call-Outs
Use call-outs to provide instructions or descriptions of on-screen elements.
- Text: Arial, white, center-aligned.
- Fade: 1 second in/out.
- Use drop shadow (see below).
Shapes
Use arrow, cross-out, circle, etc. shapes to call attention to a specific part of the screen.
- Draw time: 1 second.
- Fade: 1 second in/out.
- Use drop shadow (see below).
Drop Shadows
Use a bottom-right corner drop shadow (default setting in Camtasia for Windows) on applicable elements.
For Snagit, use the Shadow effect. Set the setting to the default gray with the shadow in the bottom right corner at a size 15.
Zoom In/Out
Use zoom to call attention to specific part of the screen.
- Scale: In – varies, Out – 100%.
- Position: varies.
Transitions
Timing should generally be 1 second.
Spotlight
Use to emphasize a section of the screen. Usually should remain on screen at least three seconds.
- Fade: 1 second in/out.
- Intensity: 50%.
Music
Volume

Music should fade out or down when narration begins and should not be above 20% during narration.
Genre
- No metal, rap, or dubstep.
- Genre of background music should fit the video mood, content, and style.
Licensing
- Use https://www.bensound.com/ for royalty-free music.
- If using music that is not royalty-free, music license purchases must be approved.
Instrumental vs. Voice
- Background music should always be instrumental.
- Songs with lyrics should only be used when the video does not contain spoken words.
- Exceptions to this can be made on a case-by-case basis.
